WAVERIDER HISTORY :

WAVERIDER AND ASTRA

The Waverider reentry vehicle was devised by Professor Terence Nonweiler of Queen's College, Belfast, and was intended to be the manned spacecraft in the British space programme based on the Blue Streak missile.

Waverider Mach 4ASTRA continued work on the vehicle and has been at the forefront of its promotion since the 1960's. It has pride of place on our main logo as well as the Airdrie Branch Logo.

WAVERIDER DESIGN - BY PROFESSOR TERENCE NONWEILER

When anyone talks about "designing a waverider", what would be usually understood is that a shape of shock surface, and the shape of Nasa's X51 Waverider Scramjetthe wing leading-edge that intersects it, are chosen. That's easy enough of itself. The hard part is working out what the shape of the under-surface of the wing that produces the shock. The process can be given an extra twist if, as for instance in Gordon Dick's flexwing waverider, the surface shape has to satisfy additional constraints - imposed in Gordon's design by its surface flexibility.

WAVERIDER - AN OVERVIEW BY ASTRA MEMBER - GORDON ROSS

Designed in the 1950’s by Professor Terence Nonweiler, Waverider flies on its own hypersonic shockwave. The revolutionary vehicle concept won Nonweiler the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Gold Medal.

The Waverider provided a new way of producing lift in aerospace planes. It was partially developed as a concept but was discarded by the U.K. government, as Britain pulled out of manned spaceflight, due to pressure from the U.S.A., who were by then engaged in a space race with the U.S.S.R.

Since then, ASTRA has doggedly persevered in trying to get this remarkable concept fully developed. History of ASTRA's involvement with Waverider.
